The Eastern Union – EU says the outcome of the just concluded off-cycle Osun State Governorship election is proof that Nigerians can determine the results of the 2027 general elections.
In a statement signed by its National President, Hon. Charles Anike, the group described Governor Ademola Adeleke’s victory as well deserved and commended the people of Osun for their faith in democracy.
According to Hon. Anike, “The victory is not only a reassurance but a confirmation that a New Nigeria is possible in 2027, if all Nigerians show the same courage and commitment as the people of Osun.”

On Voter Courage and Turnout
“We commend Osun voters for their courage and determination to ensure their votes counted, despite threats of violence and intimidation by imported political thugs and hoodlums.
“The large turnout in the face of unchecked threats shows that Nigerians are ready to take back their country and their destiny.
“It also proves that when citizens turn out en masse, rigging becomes very difficult. The Osun model is commendable and we recommend it to other states, especially the Southeast.

“Our people must not succumb to any form of threat or intimidation. We must all come out to vote in 2027, because a New Nigeria is possible.
“Another key lesson is that Osun people did not just vote and leave. They waited patiently and defended their votes until victory was declared. That courage frustrated the imported riggers.”
On INEC
The EU applauded INEC for upholding the will of the Osun people and urged the Commission to sustain that standard to redeem its image.
“We look forward to a reformed and courageous INEC for the 2027 elections. We pray INEC does not return to its old ways, the era of inconclusive elections, brazen compromises, and ‘man-made glitches’.”

On Security Agencies
The group rated the performance of security agencies as “average and, in some cases, below average,” citing alleged influx of political thugs.
“Our security agencies must be fair to all citizens, irrespective of party, tribe or religion. There should be no sacred cow. Every political thug and bandit must be prosecuted to serve as deterrent.
“Therefore, the future of the 2027 elections lies squarely with INEC and security agencies. We urge them to be patriotic, professional, and to act with the fear of God.”
On Democracy and Leadership
The EU said the spontaneous celebrations across Osun show that “the only way forward is for elections to reflect the will of the people.”
“We also commend President Bola Tinubu for congratulating the winner. We encourage him to continue on the path of honour so history will be kind to him. He must not listen to selfish aides who feed him lies just to remain relevant.
“Finally, we commend Davido for using his platform and resources to ensure the will of Osun people was not eroded. That is how to invest in the future. His concern for the masses is a wake-up call to other influential Nigerians.
“Kindness to the poor echoes in Heaven. Blessed people must not join forces with an irresponsible government to oppress the poor.”
INEC has fixed the 2027 general elections for January 16 for presidential and National Assembly polls, and February 6 for governorship and State Assembly polls.
